Tuning A Kite
Tuning a kite

For most new kiteboarders it gets confusing hearing other riders explain how they trim their kite. Trimming essentially mean adjusting the kite lines length to change the angle of the kite (aka angle of attack) when in the air.
People talk about their steering lines and flying lines or sheeting strap or trim loop. It can get confusing when comparing one kite trimming device to another. Overall every 4-line kite has some type of trimming device that usually attached to the front lines of the kite and allow you to shorten or lengthen the front lines of the kite.
By shortening the front lines you cause the angle of the kite to angle forward in front and thereby depower the kite. The opposite occurs when lengthening the front lines. When the kite is tilted forward or straight, the kiteboarder gets less power, until the kite has so little power it falls out of the sky, leading edge first. When the kite is tilted back, the kiteboarder gets more power, until the kite stalls and falls backwards out of the sky, trailing edge first.
The biggest mistake for probably every beginner though is not having their kite property adjusted. Many new riders when they are in lighter winds try to increase the speed of their kite by pulling in on their bar and letting out their front lines which causes the kite to “flare” out in front. This actually kills the aerodynamic of the kite and will make it worse.
It’s most important to make sure your lines are the same length with the chicken loop released and flush with your control bar. The trim strap usually is set right in the middle of its setting when checking to make sure your lines are the same length.
Remember that when the kite is parked above you at noon position the front and back edge should be even so that kite isn’t flaring and should generally be just hovering above you without it drifting back or forward in the wind window or left or right.
A properly tuned kite will make the difference between a good day of riding and a frustrating one.
