How To Kiteboard
How to Kiteboard steps
YOU WILL NEED LESSONS but the basic steps on kiting (THAT YOU LEARN IN LESSONS) are :
1. Evaluate the launch site and wind conditions. Set up the proper kite those the wind conditions and launch following proper safe launch rules.
2. Practice flying your kite. You will usually learn on a small trainer kite on land to understand wind window and kite flying fundamentals. Get used to flying your kite on land, it will save you time in the water. You should be in control of the kite at all times and know what to do if things go wrong. Practice flying the kite at the edge of the wind window, 11 o'clock for left and 1 o'clock for right first. Then learn to do figure 8 loops to pull you in a straight line. Once you've got this figured out, you can move onto the water.
3. Now you get in the water but before you get to use the board you must learn about body dragging. You'll need to know how to do this if you have to retrieve your board in the water and learn to get upwind. Body dragging is essentially when the kite is in the air, you practice dragging yourself up and down through the water. This is essential to safety so make sure you are very comfortable with it before progressing further.
4. Get on your board. While your kite is in the air parked at noon(top of the wind window), sit back in the water supported by your harness. Then practice putting your feet onto the board and just simply float there getting used to the feeling. Finally, pull yourself up into a standing position being careful not to over rotate or you'll fall forwards.
5. Learn to water start and how to correctly steer the kite into the window to get planing on the board. It will take a while to learn how to stay upwind on your board so you will usually have to walk back upshore or use body dragging to get back to where you started.
6. Learn how to change direction on the board. To change direction is simple. Just push the bar forward and bring the kite right above your head. This will slow you down and allow you to move the kite to the other side of the wind window to start you off in the opposite to direction.
7. Learn to get upwind on the board without slowing down too much. Once you learn to stay upwind, you are a kiter !!!
