LAUNCHING AN INFLATABLE KITE

Launching Your Inflatable Kite on Land

Ideally your want to have a helper launch your kite when you are on land so that your kite isn't impacted by anything on the ground.

The first steps are setting up your kite, so roll out your bar/lines with the lines out of the way of people and then you walk out your lines to make sure you have no tangles. Then inflate the kite and place it with the leading edge on the ground and facing into the wind, preferably on the edge of the wind window if there is room at the launch site. Check your safety system and then attach the lines to the kite pigtails.

When you are ready to launch find a helper to walk the kite towards the water with the kite facing into the wind on the edge of the wind window so that if you get pulled the kite will pull you towards the water. Hold up your bar and look to make sure your lines are untangled and that the lines are taunt(never launch with slack in your lines). When you are ready to get the kite in the air make sure it is at the end of the wind window and that your safety system is attached. Give the thumbs up to your helper and they should literally be able to just let the kite go and it will move up along the edge of the wind window. (The launcher should never try to throw the kite into the air as it could cause the lines to lose tension and yank you)

Self Launching

Self launching has improved with newer kites vs. the older traditional C-shaped kites. Essentially you follow the same steps as above but you have the bottom end of the kite folded over with sand/sandbag sitting on the folder part so that kite faces into the wind at the wind window edge and as you walk away from the kite with the control bar the lines will tighten and the tension will pull the sand off and the kite will float up into the window. Make sure you have tension in the lines with launching or your kite will roll back and drag along the ground, and always have the kite launching towards the water.
