To take kiteboarding lessons or not is a question that pops up all the time. The fact of the matter is there is no question. Kiteboarding lessons are a must. Here are the best reasons why you should take kiteboarding lessons :
1) Safety
Kiteboarding is a dangerous sport. Taking lessons will familiarize you with the safety aspects of the sport and how your equipment works. Knowing this means a safer experience for yourself and those around you and will keep the sport from getting banned in locations.
2) Speed up your learning experience
Why take months to learn kiteboarding when you can be up and riding in as quick as a few hours with less pain ? The quickest way to get on the water is to invest in kiteboarding lessons. Kiteboarding instructors use proven teaching methods that will get you on the water in no time and the amount of money you spend on lessons will be cheaper than buying gear and destroying it trying to learn on your own. Also, kiteboarding lessons will give you an idea if you even like kiteboarding before buying all the gear. (Although, you rarely meet someone who doesn't like kiteboarding once they try it....it's addicting)
3) Lessons let you trash someone else's gear
Trust me, you will beat your kites when first learning. Everyone when they start kiting will make the mistake of cranking the kite into the power zone by accident and be yanked forward or whip it fast in the other direction thinking that will slow the kite(It doesn't). The first few hours on a kite you are sure to give your kite a beating as you will be dropping it constantly. If you take lessons you get to use school equipment, which means you don't have to worry about dropping the kite and many times the schools will have excellent kites geared for lessons and easy water relaunch.
4) Learn in safe conditions
If you start by yourself you will have no idea what kind of condtions are safe to learn in. How would you know if the wind is too strong, or even how to read the wind? Your kiteboarding instructor will take you to a beginner-safe beach that will make your learning experience safe and pleasant. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT (Honestly kiting can be damn scary when you are trying to go out in the wrong conditions. I remember starting out I saw a beginner who decided to just buy a kite and launch just upwind of a power pole and he launched it directly into the wind window. He got yanked hard across the dirt and that brand new kite ended up wrapped around a high-voltage power line.....brand new $800kite was toasted and some pissed off locals) !
5) Lessons let you meet other kiteboarders
There's nothing more intimidating than starting a new sport without knowing anyone. Kiteboarding schools are a great place to meet other beginners just like you. Meet other beginners and practice kiteboarding with them once you're done with the lessons. I learned to kite in the Gorge,Oregon where a lot of prokiters live/ride in the summer and it can be intimidating trying to start out and avoid crashing near anyone but when you are in an area that is designated for/known for beginners it is a lot less intimidating. PS- Most kiters are cool and will help beginners as long as they know you did lessons first, as most experienced kiters get frustrated by people who avoid lessons and break obvious kiting safety rules and potentially can hurt others and give kiting a bad name. Don't be that guy, trying to save a couple bucks skipping lessons !
6) Better Knowledge
Don't learn kiteboarding by reading your kite manual or watching youtube videos ? No book or site can replace one on one instruction. Kiteboarding lessons will teach you valuable knowledge such as how to rig your lines, how to self launch your kite, how to relaunch your kite, how to body drag, how to kite safely, how to go upwind, etc.
7) Get cheaper gear
Most kiteboarding schools have great beginners packages available to students. These packages are often way cheaper than what you will find at a normal kiteboarding shop and the savings will offset a lot of the lessons cost. TIP - Make sure though if you take lessons away from home that you should avoid buying gear where you take lessons if the riding conditions are really different then your home conditions(because you will have the wrong gear when you get home), but many times just let your instructor know your local conditions and they can advise you.
8 ) Try out different gear
Most kiteboarding shops have a huge range of kiteboarding gear that is ready to try. Taking a kiteboarding lesson will give you the opportunity to try a wide range of gear before you buy and most will let you use the gear for free after your lesson for the rest of the day.
9) Peace of mind
Taking kiteboarding lessons means a kiteboarding instructor is there to help when you need help. If you drop your kite or loose your board they'll be there to help and nowadays many instructors use waverunners to assist you while you are learning in the water.
